Son of a gun! I tightened the knob on the other side of the reel and the handle pulled in tight and no longer flops back-and-forth. Why does something so simple cause me such difficulty? Very frustrating. Thank you very much to everyone who responded to my question and offered such excellent instruction and suggestions.

I recently purchased a Shimano NASCI Spinning Reel 3000HGFB with a handle that pivots on a hinge. Visualize the shaft coming out of the reel and then a 90 degree bend having at its end the rotating handle which you grip. Imagine that the 90 degree bend from the shaft is hinged so the handle can flop back and forth. What is the reason for this hinge? I don't care for the feel and am wondering about the purpose for this feature. Am I missing something? What is the advantage? Is there a way to replace it with a normal handle? Thank you.
