Shegan

I have known that largemouth and smallmouth will inhabit the same waters, typically when I saw this either the largemouth or the smallmouth seemed to be the dominate species. I fish a lake where both species are prevelant and grow to decent sizes. Can anybody give some insight as to why this maybe occuring? Thank you.
