Near my home there is a man made quarry pond that is feed from a salt water river for about 2 hours at high tide.The pond is about 500'x1000' and over 100'deep inspots with a crane buried in the middle from them hiting an underground spring when digging and it flooded the hole too fast for them too get it out.The pond has some shallow areas with steep drop offs down to 35 or40' in only about 20' from shore.Right now the bass are in the shallows and spawning.This pond is unique in that the alewives or herring are able to get into the pond in May and spawn. Also some good size stripper are in the pond chasing after the herring.Then later on the herring hatch and it looks like rain on top of the water from all the tiny herring less than 1"in lenght. The place is hard to get to and is never really fished and I have caught nice bass up to 5 6 pounds and strippers to 15 pounds. My questions are once the water warms and the bass leave the shallows were and how do I catch them? Will they be along the drop off which is like a cliff from 2' to 40' in 10 to 15' of distance or will they hold up in the deep water of over 100'? Right now catching them is easy in the shallows but once the summer hits my sucsess rate plumets. I have a pelican bass raider that I bought just for this pond with fish finder to locate the dropoffs and structure. I spent most of my life fishing in salt water but this place has me hooked on catching monster bass so anyone who has fished in the same type of situation I appreciate the advice.
