Help With Reel Knots

Featured Replies

Hi, I'm new to the forum and I have a question.

I have a spinning reel my dad bought brand new from his boss for $10 each (we have 3 or 4), retail costs I think $59.

At least once a day on the lake when casting, it takes the wrong thread from the reel or whatever and makes a loop near the bail and I have to keep pulling the line until I get to where the loop is supposed to be, then untangle if it knots up, then reel it all back in.

Is there anything I can do to prevent this? I'm using 10lb line.

I just put this line on about a month ago, after having to cut off a bunch of my previous line because the loop.

Two things:

  1. You may have too much line on the spool. Don't fill it all the way up to the rim. Instead, you should have at least 1/8"-1/4" of the lip exposed.
  2. Never, never, NEVER close the bail by turning the handle. Always close the bail by hand, and ensure the line has tension before cranking the handle.

These two tips will eliminate 99% of your problems.

Thanks for the fast reply. I always make sure it has tension before reeling it, I use my other hand to make tension if needed. I think I have a quarter inch not filled on the reel.

I usually always close the bail by reeling it in, I will stop and hopefully it will stop the loops.

Thanks again.
