Snaps

Featured Replies

Just read a few posts about using snaps to reduce bait swap time. What are the pros and cons of using them and what baits can you use them on. Do they get stuck in cover when using a jig

I only use snaps on my crank baits and jerk baits which give the lures more freedom to do what they are designed to do. They do save time, however don't forget to check your line and re-tie often. I never use them on soft plastics or jigs because I want as natural of a presentation as possible and usually these presentations are slower so the less amount of exposed metal the better in my opinion. Good luck.

I'll second everything Fishndude said. First thing I do when I get a new hardbait is remove the split ring.

I have a condition called Essential Tremors, which means my hands shake. Trying to tie a Palomar knot can be a fifteen-minute ordeal for me. For that reason most of my rods have snaps on them. I've not noticed a decline in hook-up ratio since I started using them.

I don't have tremors like Long Mike does, but I do use snaps on all my rods. Can't prove anything, but I don't see any evidence that they deter strikes due to visibility or change in action, which, by the way, I think is highly over-exaggerated. Whatever the case may be, I have 100% confidence while using them.

I use only the ball bearing snap swivels most of the time. I can't see good enough to tie knots fast enough when changing lures in the low light and bright light conditions. Plus the snap swivel will give the crankbaits a little more side to side action its like having a hinge when using the ball bearing snap swivel.
