Didymo / Rock Snot

Featured Replies

The invasive algae known as Didymo or Rock Snot has been discovered in a 60 mile stretch of the upper Delaware. I've looked into this a little bit and read that the infestation can have a negative affect on fish numbers by smothering the native algae and insects thus disrupting the food chain. Anyone else dealing with this in your waters? How severe has the impact been? If nothing else it makes fishing kinda miserable by clogging up the baits, hooks...

We have it many places where I live, it isn't much of a threat to bass as it is to Trout. All the clear water streams have it where I live. I'm fully against felt soles on waders. I always scrub my kayak after a Rappahonak river excursion, the VDGIF has found Didymo in that river so I try my best not to spread it. Smallmouth are effected by it too. Largemouth seem to be unphased by it according to the local Fishery Biologist.

Here in WV, there has been invasion of that particular species on the Potomac (if I am not mistaken). I agree it is a pain. It also wouldn't be a threat if people cleaned their boots, boats and gear.
