Alaska Fishing Trip

Featured Replies

Alright guys, I just picked up my Pflueger 6940, spooled it with Suffix PB 30lb and got a better Salmon Rod, ST. Croix Wild River Rod, 7'6", Fast action. I'm so excited, this is gonna be my first trip to Alaska, 2 full weeks of fishing, Kodiak Island, Denali, Homer and Palmer along with several other small towns. Gonna be Salmon an Trout hunting with my dad, gonna be a great week. May isn't the BEST time to go there but still, plenty of fish are to be caught. Who here has been to Alaska?

Haven't been yet. I wanna go bear hunting up there. Just can't afford it right now. A co worker of mine has been though. He said watch out for the mosquitoes, they apparently get the size of B52s.

Spent 4 months in Soldotna (Kenai Peninsula) in 2000. There are some huge rainbows in the Kenai river, not to mention all the big kings (you'll miss the reds though). Should be an awesome trip. Here's a little halibut I picked up in between Homer and Deep Creek.

I've been three times. Once in April (the trout to the left cam efrom this trip).

Was there twice in mid-August for silvers. May I suggest a stop in Ninilchik, not sure of the spelling, just to see. It is an old Russian fishing village. Have agreta trip. Talkeetna is pretty cool too.

I'm catching tons of fish, about 100 Pollock, 15 Halibut and flounder, tons of lingcod and rockfish. I've only caught 3 kings though. This place is great. Homer is my kind of town, probably gonna move here haha.

100 Pollock? I thought you were fishing in Alaska not Poland. ;)

haha!! They are basically what are in Filet O fish sandwiches. Apparently they are plentiful here.

Homer is a really cool town. I couldn't believe all of the eagles out on the spit that just strolled along the beaches and hung out on the rooftops, not to mention the incredible scenery with the ocean and mountains in the background. Have you been to the "pond" out off the spit where some of the kings return thinking they're supposed to spawn? That place can really stack up with a lot of kings at times.

Are you doing the halibut charter out of Homer or Deep Creek? Deep Creek was the first place I'd ever been launched off the beach by a tractor... pretty cool. Thanks for the update and hopefully you get into some big fish before you leave.
