(Since I'm not Butch Brown, I'm going to make a new thread for every swimbait fish I catch)

Gear: Mattlures XH/ Cardiff 401A/ Big Game 30 lb test/ ROF5 hudd hitch.

Armed with the new-found confidence, I went back to my "new" swimbaiting hole today for 6 hours in the afternoon.

Earlier in the day, I had seen the fish follow the bait, but not bite. Finally, on the last cast of the day, she bit. Long 50 yard cast, let the bait sink, first turn of the reel handle, and she just about jerked the rod off my hand.

She was all-spawned out, long and thin, with a bloody tail.

No pics, camera ran out of battery. Fish went 9 lbs 4 ozs.

The elusive DD still eludes me. Twice in three days, I thought I had a 10+. Oh well!

Taut line, super sharp trebles. If I had a penny for every time I hooked myself while "preparing" those hooks prior to rigging...

Thirty pound line really doesn't stretch that much if it's fresh. Since the hook dislodges when pulled, a hookset isn't really a problem. It gets sketchy after the third fish you catch on an OG wake and the line is as stretched as it's gonna get. Time for new line.

That's a completely generalized statement. Big Game has a lot of stretch, but will a fresh spool the first hookset shouldn't be a problem. After the third or fourth fish, it will start to get spotty. When you're using an 8' XH rod, even if the line is stretching at ~15%, a hookset is no problem.

Big long rod, small sharp hook, decent mono = no problems. The bass probably set it herself on the strike. I would want to try to sink the original hook on the 8"er at that distance, but that's a big part of the reason for the trebles.
