Mounting A "transom Type" Trolling Motor On Bow

Featured Replies

I want to reverse the head on my transom trolling motor, and mount it on the bow of my jon boat, but I'm unsure where to mount it. Wouldn't the motor need to be pretty close to the center of bow in order for me to reach it and steer properly(when seated)? Even if I use an extension handle? I see no problem if I'm standing, but what about whem I'm seated? Thanks for any advice.

Probably quite a few people who can't make the mental picture of what you are trying to do. This is where a picture would really help.

Some do somewhat like you want but clamp the motor to the right or left side of the seating position so no handle extender is needed. You just need a 1" X 4" X 6"-8" board for a spacer inside the hull to give some ridigity to the mount location.

If I was to do what you plan, I would add a Big Foot switch to the negative power wire to turn the motor on and off to maximize fishing time and lessen boat operation time.

Additionally that was just discussed down below:

I'll see if my daughter can figure out how to post a pic. I just want to reverse the head on my transom trolling motor, and use it on the front of my square jon. I want to be able to steer it while seated also.

Wayne, I'm considering a Big Foot switch, but I don't know if it would really help me much. As I understand it, it just turns the motor on and off. If I have to have my hand on the motor to turn anyway, it doesn't seem like it does much good.

I have a Transom Mount Motor with the head turned 180* on my Pelican Mini-Boat and use a Big Foot with it, works perfectly. I use the Big Foot constantly, I reach down with my hand or bump the handle with my knee to change direction while using the Big Foot to power the motor. There are times when I don't need the Big Foot and then I just lock it in the on position and use the handle to cut the motor on/off. The Big Foot is one option I would never consider giving up.

The Big Foot switch increases your fishing time and lessens your boat driving time.

As long as you don't have to steer, correct?

Well that is kind of obvious.

A hand controlled bow mounted trolling motor is very popular in some parts of the country and for saltwater fishermen.

offset, either to right or left. Usually there is some sort of handle on the front (middle) of john boats. Don't want trolling motor or handle to get in the of each other.

They make adapters to mount on the front, then mount the trolling motor to that.

Once I'm lined up & headed down a bank I'll use the Big Foot to cut the motor on and off 10-20 times before I have to turn the motor. And often I just bump it with my knee to change directions and never miss a cast. IMO in a day's fishing the Big Foot gives me 25% more casts than if I was reaching for the trolling motor handle every time I wanted to energize, or de-energize the motor.
