So i was fishing at uvas reservoir here in san jose CA and after catching a few 1 lb bass i got snagged up really bad, and since i was using a weedless worm on a texas rig I figured it was just stuck in between somthing. Therefore i decided to do what everyone tells you not to do and tried to muscle it out and ended up snapping my ugly stik in half. So i bought a new medium action rod and after a few days tried to return the broken one and all they could offer me was a light action rod of the same brand so i took it. Im not sure how much use it could be of. can i only catch small fish on it? what is the light action rods purpose?

You can catch most anything on it. Pretty much they work well for light baits and sparse cover. I fairly regularly get smallmouths up to about this size out of rivers on UL gear. Not huge, but they are a ton of fun. I wear a size 13 show, so I'm guessing this fish to be 3lbs. No need to limit yourself too much.

Its called finesse fishing, lol.

My my two favorite Smallmouth rods are similar to yours, one is a G. Loomis 6' light IMX with a 1000 MgFB Stradic, and my favorite is a 6'3" MXF Legend Elite with a 1000 Stradic FJ it and the Loomis double as finesse walleye rods in shallower water! The Ugly stick will work for that also, just wont have anywhere near the sensativity, and at times that is important for this kind of fishing.

But with a slip bobber it could work with live bait for Walleye and Bass, but would work really well for Crappie and Bluegill or perch like in my Avitar.

My honest 2 cents is the biggest problem with an ugly stik will be its extreme flexibilty. Even with light or ultralight tackle a little backbone is nice when you want to steer a fish, just need to it flex for cushion when they want to go. Hopefully you know what I mean.

You shouldn't have any problems fishing downsized moving baits or topwaters with it, and sometimes those are just the ticket. JMO, but if you can learn to watch your line and rod tip, and I've always been in the habit of having my finger on the line with spinning tackle when I'm not reeling, you won't miss many bites even with more of the applications I consider finesse techniques. I don't believe your rod can telegraph anything that didn't cause movement somewhere.

ok cool i guess i was under the impression that if i landed a larder fish i would snap my rod in two. Guess im gunna have to go and tack a second pole on my fishing license. thanks for the info guys.

I like light and ML action rods for fishing spinners and light balsa plugs like Rapalas. I've landed some good sized bass on a light action rod. I recall my dad landing an 8 pounder on a light action glass rod.
