Calling All Tackle Junkies! Opinions Needed

Featured Replies

Okay, so I'm new to this forum and was perusing a thread of posted rod/reel collection photos. May I just say, WOW... And why do you need all of that? I have a browning Midas baitcaster on a st. Croix triumph rod and a pflueger president spinning reel on an Abu Garcia vendetta. I find I can throw anything I want with one of these two setups. I am BY NO MEANS saying that having more than two setups is unreasonable. I just want to know what slight nuance differences in rod or reel help to accomplish what specific task. I love looking at different tackle options online and would really like to buy something outstanding. I just need to justify the purchase somehow! Hehe. Please give me a bunch of reasons to blow a few paychecks. Thanks

What's your favorite technique and price range you'd be willing to spend on that favorite technique?

Roadwarrior often makes his post about only needing 3 rods for bass fishing. The rest are for specific techniques used by the fishing fanatic. I get little time on the water. I'll take 6-10 rods in the car with me. How many depends on whether I am fishing alone or not. I don't need that many rods, but what I do is select a few to take in the boat with me based on what lures I plan on fishing. Rather than change lures, I grab a different rod. Not to say that I never change lures because I do......sometimes. If I'm fishing from shore, I'll carry 2 of them with me. In this scenario I will change lures occasionally, but after fishing these 2 rods for awhile, I'll go back to the car and select a couple others to fish.

As far as needing reasons for blowing a couple pay checks I'd have to say you are lucky. I don't need a reason other than I would like to try a specific item. My excuse for buying is that I won't have the money to spare once retired. (Actually don't now for that matter.) I'm loading up for the future. However, this line of reasoning can only take a person so far. I like reels. My 22nd one is suppose to be shipped tomorrow. My first reel after getting back into fishing was purchased a bit over 3 years ago. If I could afford it, I'd have another 22 in short order. :eyebrows: Did I say I like reels? I've got several reels that haven't been spooled yet, and at least 3-4 rods that haven't been on the water yet either.

As bad as this may seem, there are guys whose collection of rods/reels/tackle make me look like a piker. Why, my most expensive lure was around $16, and I've only got that one. :( Some people have lures where the price of just one of the lures costs more than many of my rods. Imagine that!

Yes sir, if you need a reason to buy another rod and reel, then you aren't a tackle junkie. Consider yourself lucky. It might be best for you to forgo another combo. Who knows, that might be the one that puts the bait monkey on your back.

One of the reasons I have so many is time. For instance when the bass are hitting the shad in the heat, I have between 6am and 8am to have any luck. Switching to a different bait or presentation takes more time if I have to retying. Factor that in with catching, releasing, photos, weighing and measuring that two hours goes fast.

Also each different weight of lure requires a different setting on the bait caster. I don't have 200 plus dollar rigs so sometimes mine are a pain to tune just right. Once I get a bait and weight tuned perfectly I wont change it. For me having no patients when it comes to mechanical equipment, another set up is just eaiser.

Plus like firearms, they are like crack or lays potato chips. One just isn't enough

BASSclary, I like to fish a finesse jig/ shaky head or a drop shot most of the time. As far as price goes, $250 for the whole setup is basically my limit. I dropped a nice pflueger on a Shimano rod into a lake in the boundary waters when I was 18 and ever since I can't get myself to really take the leap to the next level of equipment.

By the way, everyone's responses were great! I was afraid of being mocked for my lack of knowledge, but I guess people who fish are just as nice online as they are when they're waving to you from their boat!

Anyone that mocks a guy for asking any question to better prepair him self should be caught and not released ;)

I'm also going with the time it takes to retie on another lure. But also the rod is matched to the technique being used. I get more feel from a stiff rod with jigs and rigs. I prefer a limber rod for cranks. Then there's swimbaits, spinnerbaits, weightless worms and so on. I usually have no less than 6 rods rigged and ready for action while on the water. And depending on what lake/structure I plan on fishing. I mix and match the rods to them. I often spend more time sorting and rigging my gear than I spend on the water actually using them. There isn't enough room in my boat or in my tackle bag to haul it all , So I want to be sure I have what I need. I will also blame it on the monkey!

If you can get by with 2, The more power to you. But I'm sure you'll get monkey bit someday! He'll tell you will get more feel from a extra fast action heavy powered rod while fishing heavy jigs. Just after you miss a fish on what you have now. Or when you pull the hooks from a fish while deep crankin. He'll say a Moderate action medium heavy power would have landed that fish.

Its always the monkeys fault and how he whispers things in your ear after missed fish! :wink3:

Dear, Lord brother that is true, mine is the retie as well. i fish from the shore, and take 3-4 max, then if my bro goes theres another 2. i have scion box car and they are great on gass and some rods, most of my bros are 6'6, so with some love the fit 100%. leaned in the back.. yea i got OT. Like tonight, if this ungodly heat disaperars, i will got with 3 rods, skinny dipper, frog and swim jig.. plus each rod has its own action, i dont think a H rod would be good for SD or SJ

I am going to say that I just really like to have a combo for a specific task and leave it that way. One instance if I am working a bait and all the sudden bas start poping shad on the water I can go directly to a differnt combo and 90% of the time I will catch that fish. I believe more tackle and combos help you deliver a better presentation and give that bait the movement it needs. Just like when I throw spinnerbaits I like to have a softer tip to obsorb the shock of that fish smacking it like a frieght train. I believe the better suited for your situation and the more time you have with your bait in the water up your chances of catching that monster. The downside to all of this my Wife thinks I am nuts and spend to much money on gear. I think Coach purses are crap. Thats my take sorry for getting of track. Welcome to the greatest fishing forum on the web.

I think Coach purses are crap.

Everyone has a monkey, I take it thats your wife's?

I take 6 rods with me on te boat and that's all I own. Besides a fee surf rigs. I don't use a lot of different techniques so 6 is all I would need some people like to fish 10-12 different ways in a day do they can justify the rods, for me it's 2 jigs 1 frog 1 crankbait 1 senko and a shakey head. I never change up lures I can always get bit on what I have rigged. So for me retieing isn't an issue I only do it when I get a fray or break off. For you it might be different you can justify Ross for specific technique IMHO

I fish from shore most of the time and I travel with four setups so I can cover a chunk of water quickly with four different lures and countless presentations until I know what the fish want. IMO this is faster and also more enjoyable for me. It also means I can tie everything on at the house the night before and hit the water hard and fast when I get there.
