Steering Cable Probs - Replace Or Clean?

Featured Replies

The motor has full range of motion to the right, although it feels very sticky and moans pretty loud. At dead center, the wheel turns 1/3 of a rotation to the left and stops. At this point I noticed a few inches of the steering rod isn't going into the tilt tube. I disconnected the control arm from the steering rod and the motor has full range of motion to both sides. I disconnected the cable from the tilt tube and pulled it back. It's obvious a portion of the cable doesn't go into the rod. It's probably full of grease and dirt. I know the rod and cable come together if buying new but can they be separated so I can clean out the rod and reinstall everything?

The cable can be lubed by a tech at a shop or you can build your own cable luber. If you go to American Anglers web site and do a search there is a full explanation of how to build it with pics.

Putting lube in the cable wouldn't clean out the old grease that may be caught in there. Unless I can separate the steering rod from the cable.
