Open Water Bass Fishing Advice?

Featured Replies

I fish at my wife's uncle's quarry pretty often, and I always fish the entire shoreline of the quarry but often feel like I am missing out on so much of the water out there because I really have no clue how or when to fish open water. I know there are fish to be caught because every once in a while I will catch a stray one trolling, but I don't know any consistent techniques I can use to get them out in the open. Does anyone have any experience with this? I know there is plenty of submerged structure, but most of the quarry is no more than about 6 feet deep, with only a couple of spots that are in the 8-9 foot depth range.

I have found that a Carolina rig, deep diving cranks, and jigs work best for me in deeper water. I have also read a lot of the articles on this site which have helped me alot. Good luck.

Spend some time surveying the small pit lake with your Sonar unit. Keep in. Mind that the sonar cone area will be about 1/3 the depth; 2 to 3 foot diameter, you can troll a Bomber 7A or similar diver that run at 8' or so while looking at bottom structure. You can also.Google Earth the lake sat over head, print a copy and make notes as you survey.

First off you have to find the key spots. And it seems like you know them. You said only a few spots that are 9- 8 feet deep. You gotta fish those spots. You need to fish the water efficently by covering water fast and elimination unproductive water. Fish a c rig with a baby brush hog.A crankbait tht keeps in contact with the .bottom, and when you find thoses deep spots cant go wrong with a drop shot, shakey head or even a tube/

If it's a quarry, then it's full of rock and gravel, I would fish those deeper pockets with a spoon.

I have had some pretty good luck fishing a salt and pepper tube or a pumkin seed tube as well, me personally I like to use a drop shot with a robo worm when fishing shallow pockets like that.

Good luck and be safe !!!
