Great Indiana Bass Lake May Get Drained And Restocked

Featured Replies

Indiana anglers please speak up. West Boggs is on tap to be drained and restocked in 2014 for the purpose of increasing the blue gill population. The board says that the park has been losing money because the blue gill fishermen aren't fishing there because it isn't as good as it once was. The problem is that it is an excellent bass lake. My 2 personal best largemouths have been taken from there the past 3 years and the largemouths are footballs in that lake. There are tournaments held there during a short period of the year with usually great results. Indiana doesn't have alot of great largemouth lakes so the ones we do have we need to protect. There will be meetings about this issue in the future so I will keep updating this and let you know who we need to e-mail and file complaints with.

What are they planning to do with all the fish in it now?

I don't know but there are some great bass in there. I will try to find out what the DNR plans are. (actually the DNR is just helping the 2 counties who run the lake) But I believe back in the 90's when they did this they just killed all of the fish to eliminate the shad population.

I know this will sound stupid but why do they not just release bluegill into the lake. TWRA restocks stripers, walleye and various other species this way in its lakes and it seems to work. In fact the stripers have just about taken over.

I could be wrong but, I thought the last time they did this they tried to save as many fish as they could to return back to the lake. Please no offense intended but, we really need to know more about what the plan is before declaring it a problem. IMO, after they drained the lake it made the bass fishing much better. I walked much of the lake right after they did it and the number of dead rough fish laying on the bank was unbelievable! And yes, they didn't get all of the game fish as I saw some nice bass laying about too.

Please do keep us posted on what you find out.

Here is a little article I found on this. Sounds like the rough fish are back in unacceptable numbers again. If so, this will make the lake much better for game fisherman again.

and this from the DNR, http://www.in.gov/dn...shwild/7418.htm

Thanks MD for the information. I received my information from a tackle shop that had a hand out with some information but not what the DNR had in mind. All I know is that there are great bass in there. I fished the lake in May and caught alot of nice bass.

Agreed, a very nice place to fish. Lets hope they do a great job with the whole process.
