Help With My Setup Getting Back Into Bass Fishing

Featured Replies

hello everyone, I am getting back into bass fishing. I think i made a boo boo in buying line. I'm so used to salt water fishing all i use is power pro braid. i got 30# power pro braid.

my setup:

bass pro shops bionic blade 7' mh fast

bass pro shop's johnny morris gold series bait caster 7:1

power pro 30# test braid.

i also recently just bought another bait caster abu garcia revo sx hs left left handed 7:1 with a st. croi mh 7' pole moderate. think i mad a boo boo with this too this is why i hate ebay stores have way too many listings of the same item. not even sure what moderate is used for or if its even good for my soft baits senkos super flukes etc.

after i started talking around to people I'm not sure if i waisted my money getting braid or not seems like its 2 options 15# berkeley trilene fluorocarbon, or 65# brad for frogging.

my question is since i want to get into frogging as well i primarily fish south jersey were i live at stockton college lake i think its called lake fred. is the 30# braid i have on my bionic blade good for anything. would i be able to get away with using it as a frog rod paired with a spro bronze eye?

i have to get my new reel spooled as well was thinking about getting the 15# fluorocarbon thrown on it that's what my neighbor in my summer place told me to get. he does tournament's all over and does well and fishes with the pro's.

any help would be appreciated if the 30# braid will be good use for anything. before i go out and buy a 3rd pole and reel for frogging, and waist money.

30# which is 6# dia is a little too thin for baitcasting. Every time you set the hook, the line is going to dig in on itself. I would return it and get a 40 or 50# braid, and you should be fine with covering all aspects. As far as the fuoro, that will work just fine, or you can even try Yozuri in a 12# which may be stronger than the 15# fuoro.

30# braid is usually considered a bit low for a baitcasting reel. As a matter of fact there is already a thread on the 1st page where the OP is having trouble casting 30# braid. It is digging into the spool, and causing backlashes. I haven't used any braid less than 40# on my BC reels. 30# might work if you keep it packed tight on the spool. My guess is that there are people out there using 30# braid on a BC reel without many problems. Keep it packed tight on the spool, and give it a try.....unless you want to save it for your saltwater spinning reels.

Not familiar with the rods you selected. I have at least 2 MH rods that I wouldn't hesitate to use for frogs. Looking at the lure rating for your rod, I would have to say that it will also work for frogs.

I see LMG posted while I was typing. From line tests I've read on TT I would venture to say that 12# YoZuri would be stronger than 15# Fluorocarbon once you tie on a lure. Knots on fluorocarbon aren't as strong as for other types of line.

Welcome to the forum, and welcome back to bass fishing. Just keep an eye out for that nasty bait monkey. :)

as for the 30# i braid thats what i use in saltwater on all my bait casters i been using bait casters ever since i was about 10 I'm 23 now i could never go back to a spinning rod and i have been using braid for close to 10 years and look back saying why did i even consider using mono all the problems and head aches i had dealing with it. but i have noticed even keeping a tight grip on the line on the bass style low profile bait casters the back spin and digging in is crazy i never have that on the conventional style bait casters such as my t.d. luna. i never have back lashes or birds nests but now that you mention it i do notice it quit often even though i only used it for 3-4 days i was ready to trash the line. i paid $35 for the line not that big of a deal but if the 65# is ideal then looks like ill get that and save the other line if i can salvage it or do something. me personally if i can avoid mono just because i had it on a bait caster it came free with the reel i got was impossible to keep out of a birds nest.
