Brush Hog On A Football Jig

Featured Replies

So a brush hog on a football jig has been in the spotlight a couple times for the elite series. However I have never seen a picture of what jig head and how they are rigging it. What I'm wondering is if it's a shaky football jig or what. I would have no idea how to rig one up on a normal football jig with or without a weedguard. I like to use hula grub type baits for those heads but want to try this brush hog thing. I would think the brush hog would just be too thin to rig but I guess you just thread it on like a twin tail? Have you tried this? And what were your experiences?

Brent Chapman recently won an Elite Series event on Toledo Bend using a football jig tipped with a Brush Hog. If you go to Bass Master *, Video Library, you can watch the whole tournament; there is a close up shot of his jig and trailer combo at some point.

Mike McClelland makes no bones about his favorite jig: a Jewel Heavy Cover Football Jig topped with a brush hog.

Gerald Swindle, however, likes to toss heavy shakey heads (3/8-3/4oz) trailered by a full size brush hog.

Both methods catch fish. It's all about confidence.

Paul, I use brush hogs for jig trailers on occasion and love them. Anytime the jig bite is good and I know everyone else is likely throwing a jig I switch to the brush hog to gain the edge of doing something different. The added action the brush hog provides doesn't hurt either.

I usually bite a small piece half the length of my index fingernail or so off. I then thread the remaining brush hog onto the jig as straight as possible so that it doesn't interfere with the way my jig falls.

By the way, I use brush hogs on flipping and football jigs both.

I hope this little bit of info is helpful. Best of luck!!

Yeah, they work good, I use them. I had accidently bought a bag when I was not paying attention to what I was grabbing, and said "what am I going to do with these?". So i tried them on my jig, and it worked. Good stuff.

I'm not sure if you realize this but they are using the brush hog on a skirted football jig, not just a jig head. I say that because there is going to be a difference in where you would throw a bait on a weedless skirted jig versus the plain jig head. I personally have witnessed hula grubs on ball head jigs not getting as much as a nibble while the same bait on a skirted jig was getting crushed and I've witnessed the exact opposite too. I just wanted to make sure you knew a lot of pros were rigging them on skirted football jigs.

I like to throw a Netbait Mad Paca on a football jig becuase it's just a little wider than a Brush Hog...if you can rig it and present it in the way they want...you will get bit with either one.

I like the Yama flappin hog, and to be honey I have never tried a brush hog on a jig of any kind, I still love the simple chunks like the Denny Brauer 3x, dunno why there action is minimal and the melt on te boat sometimes lol but I catch a ton of fish with them

A shakey jig head works well also
