Quantum 1310 Cx

Featured Replies

I have a quantum 13110 CX reel And the ratio is 6:2:1 Idnlike to make this a reel for frogging. Is the ratio enough to be a good reel, and also do you have to have a 7' rod to frog with to have a good combo?

That gear ratio will work for just about anything, for frogging it is more important that the reel can hadle braided line or heavy mono. You do not need a 7' rod to fish frogs but I wouldn't use anything shorter unless I was fishing them in really sparse cover where I wouldn't need the leverage. The shortest rod I would use for frogs would be a 6'10". You also need at least a medium heavy if fishing sparse cover and a heavy or extra heavy in the slop, you really need to have the right set up in slop if you have any hope of landing a fish that strikes. I have used a 6'6" rod to fish a Yum Buzzfrog but I was making short casts to small area so my casts had to be precise but I would say I was fishing it more like a spinnerbait in places you would normally use a spinnerbait but that is the exception.

I have a 6' 6" bass pro bionic blade medium heavy rod. This would work for just open areas or along grassy bends at least until an upgrade comes along?

Also of I was to use 50 braid would it make up for the extra short 4 inches?

You can get by fishing a hollow frog on what you have. Braid is what you want for fishing slop but it has no correlation to the rod length. If and when you assemble a technique specific rig for frog fishing look for a 7'6" Heavy/Fast with a little softer tip. A longer rod and soft tip will help get longer casts as well as move lots of line for long distance hooksets and getting fish up out of the tangles. Either a 6.x or 7.x:1 reel ratio is fine but I'd reccomend something a little more stout with a good drag spooled with 50 or 65# braid.
