When Flipping What Hook To Use?

Featured Replies

When flipping and pitching what hooks do you guy's use? I'm flipping a Culprit incredi craw and gambler ugly otter's..

I'm partial to heavy, straight shanked hooks with some type of keeper just behind the eye. Unlike offset worm hooks, you'll need to angle the hook point through the nose of the bait to T-rig it. The full power of your hook set is delivered to the hook point with this type of hook. My next preference is for the same style hooks with some sort of hitch hiker that's inserted into the nose of the bait.

Using a jig with your craw or otter as a trailer is another option. It also adds the benefit of the skirt's movement and the attractant of the rattle.

Gambler 4/0 or make my own with mustard Denny Brauer and shrink tubing.

I use a Trokar flippin hook

LOVE Gammy Heavy Cover Worm hooks (5/0), but the keeper on the Trokar is more reliable. I'll never buy Mustads.

I also use trokar 4/0 or 5/0 hooks. They are very dependable and the sharpest hooks I've ever used. Some hooks will bend after even a couple good hooks sets, not trokars, they stay very true and solid.

Preciate all the info guys! I have some Gammy 4/0 and 5/0 flipping hooks. I just got into flipping and just rigged my Veritas 7' Heavy action rod with 50lb braid and a Paychex punch stop. I just have alot of trouble with the 4/0 and 5/0's tearing the bait and the bait not being even from eye to hook point.

I don't even know how to flip, but lately I've been trying my hand at punching (from the bank). The gamakatsu heavy cover worm hook worked great; but the plastic keeper fell out/ got loose after a long day's worth of fishing. I've been trying the Trokar flipping hook the last two times, whose plastic keeper seems more sturdy. But I've been having a heck of a time actually hooking up with a fish with the Trokars...

Yeah I ordered some Trokar flipping hook's but I'm gonna try these Gammy's first. I've always used Gammy and feel comfortable with em. We will see how the flipping hook goes'. My only problem seems to be the hook keeper tearing the bait. But I'm slowly learning.

I use the Mustad straight shank flipping hooks now but before the straight shank hooks became the norm O would use the Gamakatsu super line hooks and to tell you the truth I never had one bend out on me. For flipping jigs I either use the Mustad 32786 or the Owner 5304, super stout.

I use Tru Turn hooks for flipping and pitching. Sometimes I will put one of the screw-on worm keeper if I am using a thick flipping .bait

Owner Twistlock is the best bait holder, bar none. The 3X stout needle point is lethal!

I use two hooks and love them both. Owner Twistlock flipping hook with Zo wire and Trokar TK130 Flipping hook. The owner twist lock saves the bait and the angle of the eye is supposed to have the same effect as tying a snell knot.

I like Owner offset wide gap hooks. I use 4/0 for brush hogs, 3/0 for tubes, and 2/0 for trick worms.

They're strong, they're sharp, and the price is right.
