Frog Rod?

Featured Replies

I want to get a rod that can cast frogs and even flukes if I need to. I was thinking of getting a Carrot Stix Medium Heavy. Would that be a good rod? Any reccomendations. Or should I just get a heavy one?

Flukes and frogs are typically 2 different rods for most folks. I would say a compromise would be a 4 power rod around 7 foot maybe a touch longer.

You didn't mention price so it is hard to give precise rods. I have thrown frogs and weightless flukes, caffeine shads, and d-shads on 4 powered dobyns before in heavy cover.

100$ would be the max.

I mainly throw frogs. I am going to start using spinnerbaits though so that is why I was thinking medium heavy.

shimano compre or clarus MHXF 7'2 great rod for sparce cover and open water, H rod for heavy crap

Where are you throwing frogs? If its heavy cover, your gonna need something thats too far off from throwing a spinner or fluke. For a good all around rod, try the Abu Veritas MH. Im currently looking to buy a Falcon Bucoo MH, also a good rod from what Ive heard.

7ft veritas MH is exactly what you are looking for

St. Croix Mojo Bass rod. Get the "spinnerbait" rod. Its seven ft mh fast action. I use it for frogging, spinnerbaits and most of my topwater baits. Very sensitive yet strong enough to fish heavy cover. I got mine for $99 at Gander Mountain.

I own some of these rods and while the 6'6 MH/F is an excellent precision spinnerbait/squarebill rod and the 6/10 is a good worm rod (among other things) I surely wouldn't want to fish a frog with one if I didn't absolutely have to. They are definitely rated a bit heavier than they fish, which isn't bad for their intended application... Just not frogs. :)

I have a Powell Diesel 7'2 MHXF that I absolutely adore. Hollow bodies and ribbits both throw well and with some self discipline, the hooksets are nice as well. Best part is they are very well made and cost only 69.99 every day on TW.

I'll jump on the Veritas recommendation. A MH is going to be a lot more like a H with the Abu rods. I like the Mojo too but if I was to pick between the two for what you're asking I would go with the Veritas.

I had a carrot mh, 2 in fact, one lost buttcap within a day and the other had a spiral crack around the tip going down the rod. I loved the rod but the durability issues are ugh, Id still try it again just because I like the color, lol. Only rod Ive ever had a problem with, has to be manufacturing probs because I always raise an eye to people breaking rods. I caught less than 5 bass on it probably, missed 2 snakes on it..

I have a mh veritas also, micro guide version, its stiff like people said, more to heavy side. Its my favorite rod

I have a bps mh micro carbonlite which I used to frog fish, bottom contact fish, and I have used it for flukes, it may work for you. I have used it exclusively the past month as my frog rod, I dont fish for bass when Im in an area I can catch snakes, bass happen on accident for me and it handles them too. A few 2-3lb fish, no monsters.

It handled these and many others with my drag locked down all the way, so Im sure a bass wouldnt be a prob

So, what reel do you have paired with the Powell Diesel 7'2"? I just got one and was trying to PITCH with it and am not quite satisfied. But, as you say, it would make a good FROG rodd! I'm waiting for an old Curado 101B to come in and will initially try pitching with it. If that doesn't work, I'll designate it as a frog rod.
