Zoff,

I will get with you and see what dates are available by the first of the week.

Traveler,

Do you know of any other campgrounds that are in close proxy to that area?

Cedarville State Forest is the only other State Park in the area; it's 45 min from the launch at the Mattawoman creek. Cedarville is like Smallwood in that it too only has electric and no water. http://www.dnr.state.md.us/publiclands/southern/cedarville.asp

Smallwood does have a parking area with electric within the camp site area for boats, and I've seen tournament anglers parallel park along the roads at the camp site with their boats. There is a water faucet along the road near the bath house for topping off tanks, and a dump station nearby as well.

P.S. any days are good for me to have you visit, just let me know what works for you...

I think I am going with Mudkart's suggestion, full hook up's are $41 per night, and I can put my boat on the site as well, I am going to call them when they open for the season and get some more info, but the way it looks if some of these tent guys want to split the costs, they allow like 4 tents per site, but that has NOT BEEN CONFIRMED YET !!!!

I will however like I said, have more info on the place, if so desired, once they open for the season.

I did already look at that place you suggested also, it's pretty close to the same as Smallwood, RV sites are only 30 feet in length like Smallwood too.

I still wish to come up there and take a gander around with ya to see what's what though.

We camped there last weekend, pretty sure they are open. Give'em a call.

As for the camping... guess I'll just grab a hotel if Potomac wins. I will be alone anyway. Cheers!

I have a tent, if you want you can use that and stay with us on our site, or if you have a tent you will be more than welcome to pitch it on our site.

Such good people. You guys are great. Thanks!

I'm looking at joining you guys for the meet and greet. Quick question about the Potomac... I fish out of a Pond Prowler 55# TM. If the meet and greet is there, will it be too much for my little raft to handle?

Thanks and I look forward to getting out and meeting you guys and learning something about bassin in VA.

Well, you have two possible choices, 1. you could ride with one of us as a co-angler, or 2, you can use your boat in the upper Mattawoman at Slaven's ramp. How many will your boat hold, 1,2,3???

Is that not where some of the best fishing on the Potomac is anyway Traveler?

BlackMagic82, it's nice to have you on board sir, Welcome to the forum !!!

We look forward to meeting you, keep an eye out, the winner of the meet and greet spot is soon to be announced !!!

To add to Travelers post, it would be nice if we could gather all the rides we could for some available seating, if we need it, last time a few stayed home because we did not have enough boats, we would like to have all the boaters we can get, so if your ok with getting around with yours and a guest, I would like to hold you as a boater for now, is that OK ?

If it's @ Pohick, I would bring your TM and battery, then rent one of the john boats available. Lots of good spots within range of that setup. Heading back into the creeks, you may even catch a snakehead ( I did catch one very close to the rental docks last year, most will be found back in the creek areas).

My trolling motor tends to get stuck in all the grass when I head that way mud..... you get the same?

Not much. It depends on the time of year and tide. If you head nearly straight west from the ramp in August, then yes, you'll have problems. Heading more northwest to what is loosely termed a "channel" (more like a weed free area that is ~2-3 ft deep) and following that (past the island) is easier. If the tide is up you can get to the mouth of the creek on plane no problem.

This is an area where I will keep both motors out of the water and use my push-pole to move around. I don't go in there much any more because it's so shallow and it's harder to push a glass boat as opposed to my old aluminum boat. It has been a good place for Snakeheads, they like the slack water & weeds.

I completely forgot about Pohick Park as a camp site, I know it's a busy launch, and you can run into a mud flat if your not very careful, but I don't know anything about the park.

Yeah in summer i try to stick to the "channel" out of the weeds..... I have not been there at other times, so will have to check it out then. Even at high tide, the trolling motor (i am in the rear on the transom) tends to just get stuck.....dragging a forest of weeds behind me.

I do think in summer despite the shallow water it produces because 1)- Apple cover 2)- so much weeds keep the water crystal clear and super oxygenated so the fish do not need to retreat deep for oxygen.

I have never been able to pull a snakehead, which is disappointing Never even seen one but I know many people who have gotten them in there.
