Spinner Baits

Featured Replies

I was wondering if I were to use 40 pound braid with a medium sized spinnerbait if that would affect catching bass. I don't have my reels with flouro or mono so I am kinda stuck using topwater. I also have 20 pound if that would be better. Any help would be great, thanks.

Stuck using topwater for what reason? Many people fish braid exclusively for nearly all of their techniques, including jigs, senkos, spinnerbaits, cranking, and topwater.

With a spinnerbait, you're going for a reaction bite, so I don't think that the line you use matters all that much as far as getting bit goes. That being said, I think that using a line appropriate to the situation matters a lot. For instance, I wouldn't use 10 or 12 lb test around a bunch of brushy/weedy cover. 40 lb braid ought to cover nearly any situation unless you think that line visibility matters, then it won't.

I was basing it off of line visibility. Thanks guys. I'm also fishing stained water so I didn't think using braid would affect anything anyways.

I don't like braid for spinnerbaits. Around cover I would use a minimum of 14 pound test mono or fluoro, better yet 17 - 20. Doubt you would need to go much over 20.

40lb braid has the diameter around the same as 10lb mono so I think you are just fine.

No, you might even catch more. I am one of these 100% braid users. I use fluorocarbon leaders for contact and slow moving stuff. Braid for all reaction baits, including spinnerbaits.

I use braid on my spinnerbait/buzz bait combo. I don't concern myself much with the line visibility factor unless I'm slow rolling in clear, shallow water. In that case, I'll take a Sharpie and break up the outline of the last foot or two of the line by marking it every few inches.

I would definitely use a leader. I personally like mono for spinnerbaits and crankbaits. I think a little stretch is good for those types of baits. As for visibilty, I don't think it makes a difference.

adapt your equiptment for the baits you are using - Otherwise stay home and take up golf--Evolve or become extinct HMM pretty good for me -I have my moments-
