Plastics Getting Moist

Featured Replies

Does anyone know what could cause my baits to become moist when left on a rod for a day? I keep my rods and boat in my garage and whatever plastics that are out of a bag get really moist, almost like they are sweating. Oh and my hooks rust too and they are owners and mustads.

well humidity for one, some chemicals cause things to rust very quickly. Is the garage well ventilated?

It's well ventilated but ssouth Florida is very humid so I'd think that's the cause

I've noticed this also. Not sure why it happens. The rust is probably due to salt in the bait.

Get into the habit of taking off your soft plastics and cutting off your hooks before putting the rods in storage at the end of the day. Your knots (FC or mono) weaken a great deal (about 25%) when tied longer than 24 hours. You should be retrying every few hours. The moisture may be from a combination of humidity and temperature change reaching the dew point or if you are using an attractant the attractant may be reverting into a liquid. The rust is caused by galvanic corrosion; salt and whatever the liquid may be in contact with metal and staying wet for a prolonged time period, without air circulation.

I've noticed the same issue with some worms if I leave them on. I always take them off the hook now unless I'm going right back out the next morning and I just feel to lazy to put in the effort. Always re-tie the next day too!

I fish braid on enerything except treble hooked lures so do the knots still weaken?

Thats interesting about the knots. Didn't know that. Theres been a couple times when I made my first cast of the day and had my bait just fly off into the blue. Now I know why.
