Floating

Why Floating over suspending?

Because I like to get my baits back if they're hung.

Is bottom contact Important?

For me it is.  If I'm not hitting bottom, I'm wasting my time.

I'm no crankbait expert, so take it FWIW.

Same for any reaction type bait.  Contact with cover/structure is what causes that reaction bite.  Hit a rock, stop and let the bait float back a bit.

Floating cranks deflect and then float up away from the cover. Suspending baits just stay there where they can get hung easily. The floaters draw more strikes with their deflection characteristics. Period.

i like to fast crank them down to their running depth then slow it down just until i can see my rod tip twitching with the lures action . i love the DD22's , deep little n's , strike king series 6 , bomber fat free shad BD7's , spro little john deep diver's , and manns 30+ . oh yeah , i like the floating models .

Turned into a crankbait nut the past few years.  For deep cranking I use all the previous listed lures and contact with the bottom or whatever cover is arounf is an absolute must.  I love throwing a series 5 in rocks around marinas and boat docks in 4'-12' of water, especially at night during the summer.

In addition to all the baits already mentioned consider trying the Jackall Muscle Deep 15 Plus & the Bandit 700 series both of which have been very productive to me. The 700 series was the primary bait for my personal best 5 bass limit last summer.

DD22 floating, & i've got to be hitting something when i'm cranking.  Weather it be the bottom or some type of cover, if i'm not hitting it then i'm not real confident that i'm going to get bit.

Anyone tried the Strike King 6xd's yet? I'm thinking about getting some. Let me know what you think.

They are on my shopping list, unfortuneately I can't throw anything until ice goes away.

I primarly use floaters because they back up and away from cover when they hit it. I use a stop and go retrieve, and you will get FAR more strikes when you are banging off the bottom, off rocks, or other cover.

I like Mann's 15 Plus, #7 Fat raps, Bomber Fat As, Luhr Jensen Hot Lips, #7 shad raps, and the deeper running Fat Free Shads.

The Bass Pro Shops XPS Lazer Eye Nitro Hardbaits Deep Crank is one of my favorites, as is the Bass Pro Shops XPS® Nitro Shad Dancer Crankbait. Can't beat the Storm Wiggle Warts either.
