What is necessary for this technique and how to you do it?

There's a ton of really great articles on it and you can find them if you go to the top left and drop down the menu under "Fishing Articles". There have also been some real good threads in the past on the shaky head and if you do an advanced search, you can find a wealth of info.

But here is a quick rundown on my shaky head fishing. I jump around from jighead to jighead as new ones come out so I always have a new favorite, but at the moment, I have 2 kinds that I always keep in my boat. The first is the 1/4oz Buckeye Lures Spot Remover and the other is 1/8oz Spro K-Finesse jighead. I throw the Spot Remover in open water areas like between docks and over points and I use the Spro K-Finesse when I'm targeting specific things like a brushpile, rip rap, a piling, etc.

Basically any kind of worm will work.

Anyway, pop that worm or any other soft plastic on the jighead and hurl it out there.

My favorite shaky head setup is a 7' medium-light power rod with a reel with a smooth drag and 8lb test fluorocarbon line. Any brands will do, but I prefer the Powell 702 ML rod, Diawa Tierra 2500 reel, and Seaguar line. Again, any brand will work, those are just what I prefer.

As far as working the bait goes, it's really simple. Cast it out, let it sit, lift up real lightly on it to check if something is there, give it a couple small hops/shakes/drags and let it soak again. People tend to over think the word "SHAKY HEAD" and they shake the fire out of it. Trust me, you will get way more bites by not moving it. Remember that most of your bites will come as it's lying still, so it's real important to lift gently on your line so you don't pop it out of their mouths.

If your skipping docks, I suggesting glueing the wormhead to the top of the jighead so it won't slide down.

Most of the time I will alternate all day between a 5" and a 7".

Basically every kind of soft plastic will work on it.  I prefer straight tail but I bet that on certain days, you would whoop my tail with a curly tail.  Just let them tell you what they want.  I have had days when I put a small crawfish on it and worn them out, then the next day they wouldn't touch it and it was all about the straight tail worm.  Just switch until they tell you it's right
