Wake Baits.

Featured Replies

Where, and when, and how do you fish wake baits? I just picked up a few today that came in a used tackle package. I've never used them before but I think I will try them.

Spook

I use the manns and the dt fat in about 4-6 ft of water when the weeds are up to about 1 foot under the water.  They smash them so hard.

I see wake baits as an alternative to a buzz bait, that's where I use them.  Any place where a buzz bait is an option a wake bait is an option.  You can stop them and they won't sink like a buzz bait will.  For the most part, they won't crawl over logs like a buzz bait will.

The Timber Tiger DC1 doesn't seem to get stuck as much when I happen to throw over logs and other horizontal cover, and yet I've found that an angler with my skill level can pretty much get any wake bait or buzz bait stuck and it isn't that hard to do.

I throw a wake bait whenever I see cover that is a little under the surface. I also like throwing this late morning on spawning flats if i dont have luck with a buzz bait.

Shallow submerged cover or weeds is ideal. Through lily pad lanes and along weed edges is also another good place to start.

I fish them over submerged weeds as if I were "bulging" a spinnerbait, with the rod tip up and retrieving so that the bait stays just under the surface and creates a wake.

It's a good lure to try if the bass roll on your buzzbait without striking them.  Slow it down a bit and wake a crank or spinnerbait.

i like to cut the forward facing hook off the front treble and blaze the 1minus through stick ups. it bounces around and looks insane. this is a fun way to fish... wheather theyre biting or not. also fun to do if you have flooded cypress trees.

In the Ozarks we usually throw them as an alternative to topwaters. You wouldn't think a fish would come up out of 50' of water to hit a topwater, but when they're chasing shad out over submerged timber they sometimes will.

I like them for stream Smallies, too. Sometimes they get tired of seeing so many buzzbaits a walk-the-dog topwater of waker will work better.
