Hi Guys! So I got a new rod, discussion here:

It's MH action, 7". I tried it out today, haven't actually caught a fish yet, bit it feel a bit stiff when casting, and I worry it may be too stiff for a Bass. Do you think it's a good rod for Bass fishing in FL canals, or should I get another one? The same company makes 7' rods in Medium and Medium Light, as well as 6'6" in Light.

If I wanted to get a second rod that's a bit lighter, which one would you recommend? Medium or Medium Light? What would you get as a second rod for smaller fish?

Thanks!

Martin

Didn't you read the last post in your link? SirSnookalot knows those Hurricane Redbone rods pretty well. I imagine the MH you have would work fine for horsing bass out of weed beds. Looking at the specs I would consider the ratings for the Hurricane Redbone rods to be one power heavier than most fresh water rods of the same rating. My Medium Falcons have the same rating as a ML Redbone. The ML would be okay in open water, but I personally would go with a Medium as my second rod based on the fishing I have done in Florida. Heck I would go with a Medium power for the majority of my fishing up here! :)

Am I safe in assuming that you are primarily a bank fisherman? As I said before I think a 7' mh redbone is a little too much for bass fishing even in canals with vegetation, but you can get away with it. Without a doubt it's way too much for ponds. A 4000 reel on that rod is ideal, it would be good outfit for snakeheads that are in your area and an occasional saltwater outing. What I would do is take your 2500 sedona and put it on a med 7' 8/17 rod and if you are on a budget take a look at this. Hurricane makes a cheaper rod called a Calico Jack, s/auth and dicks carries them, it's about $55, this is a very good rod that I like as well as my redbones for freshwater. I know another BR member bought one he likes his. Your sedona will feel great on it and you can use it for ponds too, especially if there is some heavy cover. Ideally if I were fishing ponds with little or no vegetation I'd be using a 6'6 6/12 rod.

yea most fishing i'll be doing will be sitting on a side of a canal :-)

i'll get another rod in Medium, or a 6'6" in ML and another reel like i already have :-)

btw, I did read the last post in my link :-) it's just that I'm so new to all this that is sort of went over my head :-(

i had to go out and actually use the rod to understand the action and heavy light things. now that i actually used a different rod i understand the difference in stiffness etc. his comment only made sense AFTER i tried the new rod out, and i think i'll be getting a second one :-)

anyways, thanks for all the info and advice guys!

So I upgraded my Bass setup today: got a second Hurricane rod, 6'6" Light action and I used my Shimano Sonora 2500FB reel on it with 10lbs braided line. The 7" Hurricane Medium Heavy action rod I got last week was upgraded with Sonora 4000FB reel and 20lbs braided line :-)

Also got a tackle box and few lures etc! See picture for details!

Good move. I have that same 6'6 light I use in ponds, lots of fun. Try a snook out on that mh rod.

I tend to go lighter power from what is concidered the "norm" like ML Moderate with senkos or ML XF with Fat Ikas. Just seem to enjoy the fight more than with my stronger more expensive rod in M to MH.

Looks like you are set and have a broad range covered just need to get Ikas or Palm Trees in that box :wink2:
