I was just wondering whats everyone technique for fishing the Smithwick Devils Horse, or any prop bait. I have tried the Heddons and the Devils Horse and have yet to get any strikes. I know a lot of people who swear by prop baits. I just kind of rip it like a jerk bait. What kind of retrieve does everyone use?

Rip it, walk it, straight retrieve, stop and go, any of these can work. Just keep trying till you get a response.

I found that it tends to be a warm water, dawn or dusk lure. Those are the times they tend to be feeding close to the surface and works the best from what I have seen.

I also use it in the local river where it gets strikes of all kinds

I always use spinner bladed topwaters when there's a chop on the water. Especially on wind blown points. You cannot fish it wrong, however I usually run it fast for a couple of yards and then pause for several seconds & repeat. Depends on the mood of the fish.

If the water is dead calm, I'll use a dog walker. A little ripple calls for the popper. Then when the wind starts to kick, it's time for Devil's Horse! 

When it's calm I let all the ripples fade from the cast then move it ever so slightly I might move it 3 or 4 times then just crank it in withy a stop and jerk about half way to the boat. As the wind increases I get progressively more aggressive.

The first thing to do with a Devils Horse is to reverse the pitch of the blades on one of them. That will make them counter rotate and it seemed to be more productive that way.

If it's breezy with a good chop and I want to fish topwater, the Devil's Horse is my go-to bait every time.  I use a cadence much like using a jerk bait, making those props really toss water.  Caught a lot of fish like that.

i fish prop baits is the rain or ripple i just twitch pause the delvils hourse when it is calm i use rapala origanal floating minnow
