Not had much luck with hair jigs, but have read that many find them excellent in the winter.

Thanks Darren, I havent had much luck with them but havent gave them a fair shake either. Im from southeast VA originally,been living in the mountains for the past 15 years or so.I used to love to fish the Tidewater lakes and Suffolk lakes back then.

Hi Tyler,I live in Salem VA. Yeah I love to fish SML but it can be a tough lake to fish ,especially on weekends.I used to hunt in Franklin Co.

Not many crushing bites on a cold water hair/hare jig, so I'm not a proponent of multi-strand nylon weed guards on them. Better odds having bass hook themselves while fishing exposed points. A light wire v-shaped guard is as heavy as I fish... if I'm forced to that extreme. I don't "feel" most bites until they are already hooked. Keep the weight as light as you can and still be confident it is near the bottom.

Keith... your jig looks to be tied on a 60 degree eye stand-up head... 1/8oz.? The eye out in front of the jig like yours will help lift the nose over rock and timber. Fish it with your rod tip up (between 1:00 & 2:00) as you drag it along.

Will do OE,thanks for the tip. I didnt think of a wire guard but that sounds right,something else to tinker with.

Nice looking jig, keep it up. I tie ball head and poison tails in hair, they do work. In cold water the bite is usually soft, just an extra bit of weight, lite wire hooks help with the hook set. Don't religate hair to just cold water, they have a place in summer also.

Use them when it's slow, move them slooooowwllyy, the hair will move. I'm in touch with one of the SoCal big bass guys, hehas caught fish over 19 lbs, his favorite bait is a hair jig with pork trailer and has caught multiple fish over 15 lbs, good enough for me.

I fish hair jigs year round in East Tennessee, although not many fishermen fish them in the warmer months here. The winter bites are hard to detect and I highly recommend you be a line watcher and fish slower than ever before. OE gave good advice on the weed guard, I remove them for cold water fishing. I also use long hair no trailer in winter................Al
