Going Fishing Today... Need Some Help

Featured Replies

It's not even officially winter, and already I'm getting the itch. I live in MA so it's been pretty cold off and on here. A few weeks ago the water was starting to freeze a bit, but it's warmed up a bit, I really have no idea what that means for water temps, as I've really only just recently gotten more seriously into fishing. I usually fish local ponds, but was having absolutely no luck whatsoever throughout october, so I've hung it up since then. I've decided to head out later today. What should I bring with me, and what should I expect? Also what type of water should I fish? The shallows, the deeper parts, etc. Keep in mind the areas I'm thinking of fishing are very small ponds so their really isn't a whole ton to look for.

Any help is appreciated!

Your water temps are going to be around 37 degrees, so working slow is a must. I'd stick to a jig with a big trailer, again, worked extremely slow, and in areas in close proximity to deeper water. A drop shot with a small plastic is another way to get them, because you can work it in a target area for as long as it takes. You didn't say whether you were going to be fishing from a boat, but either way, do look for the deeper water. At least that's where I'd start. I was out yesterday, and got 4, but they were tough to come by. Good luck, man. Let us know how it goes.

Sorry for the late response. Thanks for all the advice guys, but I came up empty :-/. Will be trying again probably on Saturday, hoping for the best.

What do you guys think of spinnerbaits fished really slow?

Worth a shot, but if you tried a jig and didn't catch a fish, I would either focus on fishing slower, or finding the fish.

Normally I hide when the temps drop but I did go out Wed. Got a little action by throwing a suspending twitchbait parallel to the shore, out on the first drop off. Fished s l o w l y.

Hmm I'll have to try that. Tried some jerk baits really slow today as per other recommendations. Thing that sucks about jigs around here is all the pounds are just littlered with crap on the bottom, can't do much but come up filled with muck.
