Bucktail Jigs

Featured Replies

So today I was Christmas shopping for my grandfather at Dicks. Of course I had to buy myself some stuff. Besides buying spinnerbaits, jigs and cranks I bought some bucktail jigs. I remember reading an article on here that was written by Ike I believe that was about using bucktails for bass. I cant find it now for some reason so here I am. Anyone use these for bass? If so, how do you use them and where and when? Should i work them like I would work a normal bass jig?

I throw the NorthStar hair jig with great success in the colder months and slooowww down....let the bucktail work by enticing the fish to bite.

Yea I figured I would just drag it on the bottom starting and stopping it with long pauses in between. Seems like the hair on it would pulse and sway really well.

When it comes to bucktails I've been using them for 60 years, bluegill to billfish and just about everything in between, IMO there is no better lure that will catch more species. Is there a difference between a bucktail and a bass jig, probably not so much really, they do pretty much the same thing except the construction is slightly different. I don't use trailers too often with bucktails but when I do it's just a plastic worm, very effective on bass, snook and tarpon. Depending on my water and current I'll either swim them with a bit of an eratic motion, jig them or just float them in the current. For bass I like a "flats jig" and some come with weed guards, bucktails with a worm trailer will slay stripers.

This is just the top of the iceberg, they can be used with cutbait, livebait, casting, trolling and drifting. If I could own only 1 lure a bucktail would always be my choice, a bucktail is a bucktail, dont' care who makes it, none of them last long anyway.
