Putting A Leader On My Frog Rod?

Featured Replies

Any one do this? I've lost way to many hollow body frogs to pike because of there teeth cutting my line. So I am thinking of putting a leader on my frog rod. If anyone else does this, please explain to me you're setup!

I don't use a leader for hollow body frogs. With pike/muskie and their teeth you can try a floro leader but I would go pretty heavy. I am thinking at least 20# good quality floro. Since floro sinks I don't know if it would affect the action of the frog or your hookup ratio. I am guessing it likely will, but it shouldn't be too dramatic.

I have landed 20# muskie with 15# floro and no wire leader before on accident while bass fishing. Floro is stronger and more abrasian resistant than mono.

Also even if the pike or muskie don't cut your line your frog will likely be shredded if you do get it back. Their teeth may puncture the body and rip some of the rubber strands of the leg material off.

Good luck!

If your gonna leader, you need mono, it floats, do not use fluoro. In all actuality, you should be using a good 50-65# braid for frogs, and if those toothy critters take it, SOL.

Using any sort of wire leader will kill the action of the frog, and heavey mono or fluoro won't help matters until you reach very heavy weights. Muskie leaders are often constructed of 100lb.+ fluorocarbon. If you are losing frogs to Pike and Muskie they are most likely going to be shredded by the time you get them back anyways. I have personally landed muskies over 3' on 30lb. spiderwire.

Yes - I fish braid and a knot-able leader made by American Fishing Wire.

I usually fish the 20lb brown/camo color and it works perfectly.

My home waters are Loaded with fish with teeth and they all seem to love frogs.

The Leader does little to keep the baits from getting shredded, but at least I get to sore lip them a little for their troubles.

Here's the info.
