6Lb Line On A Baitcast Reel?

Featured Replies

I have a Daiwa Sol and a Shimano Chronarch 50 MG, light reels. Both have 30lb(8lb) braid spooled.

Could I use 6lb P-Line on these reels for finesse and drop shot apps?

Whats the lightest mono line would you use on these 2 reels?

I tried this past year doing the same thing and was not pleased with how that light of a line handled on a baitcaster. I will not go below 8# test from now on, big difference. I put the 6# on my spinning reels.

I'm running 6# InvisX on a Megabass Alphas Ito Ai for drop shotting bedding Oneida smallies in this pic:

Here is the deal.

What does the rod allow for line test?

You can go two pounds lighter and still be able to cast. More than two pounds of test and the rod will not function properly.

So if the rod's specs illustrate 8 to 15 pound test you should be able to use 6 pound test. Anything lighter will not work properly when casting and setting the hook.

Check out the bait size while you are at it and stay within those paramaters.

Ive run 4lb. on old Ambassadeur 1500c's to throw 3/16oz and even 1/8oz. with the wind.  My rod is a Loomis Kokonee ultralight.  The rod had everything to do with it.

Good luck.  I've got a Calcutta 50 I bought specifically for drop shooting with light line on a casting rod and it will handle 8 lb fluorocarbon ok, but when you try it with 6 lb, there are more problems than it is worth.   Backlashes, twist around the rods tip and so forth.  In the future, should I find it necessary to drop shot with less than 8 lb, I will use spinning gear.

I have never used 6 lb. test on baitcaster, but for what it is worth, I have a shimano curado 50E spooled with #8 yo-zuri hybrid and use it for unweighted plastics...with no problems.

If there were a reel in that price range that would go to such a low diameter, the Daiwa Sol is one of them. I have this reel and I have gone as low as 8lb and it works fine. You could always try 6 and see how it works out. I will say that my Shimano Curado 50e does not handle the light line as welll as my Daiwa Sol. Daiwa really sets the precedence for light line/lure applications.
