Tungsten: Insert or No?

Featured Replies

why is it that some companies boast that they have a plastic insert in their tungsten weights while others boast that they don't have inserts? tru-tungsten claims that no inserts provides greater sensitivity, which makes 100% sense to me.

so which is better? insert or no?

No insert. Tungsten can easily cut or fray your line especially braid.

Use the weights without inserts. The inserts in tungsten weights that have them are covering up rough edges, which will often become exposed and fray your line.

Test the weight before you start fishing with it no matter which type you use. After tying on the hook, slide the weight up and down the line with the line at an angle to the weight. If you get fraying, don't use it.

If you are real good with a Dremel tool, you can polish away any rough edges with the proper bit.

so basically baits with no inserts are the best, and these have smooth edges inside. and baits with inserts are of lesser quality, and if you were to take the insert out, the edges would be rough inside, so you should keep them in?

Baits without inserts are slightly more costly, but worth the extra funds imo. I agree with the greater sensitivity when using tungsten w/o plastic inserts.

i will only use the no insert tru-tungstens.

In using the BPS XPS tungsten and xCalibur tungsten, both having an insert, I've had the inserts slip and line frayed.

Nothing but TruTungsten for me.

The weights without inserts are also more sensitive. At least to me they are.
