New to bass fishing and I was wondering what's a nice combo starter?  What I have in mind is the  6'6 medium action pflueger trion gx-37 combo other than that I have no idea or clue of setting up a seperate build set up(rod and reel).

 

What do you guys think I should do? I'm planning to spend at most $100 on the combo. And for the set up build I'm willing to put in $150 since it seem like set up build is better?

 

I'm planning on using soft plastic more and more of a finesse type which is smaller bait size or worm.(Correct me if I'm wrong of using finesse term.)

 

What I'm planning to do is drop shot, t-rig, shakey head, mini crank, mini top water and maybe throw some soft plastic frog. I don't know if this is too much technique for a single rod because from what I read each rod do different things ... I just want a all round rod/reel to start bass fishing.

Pick a $50 spinning reel in any of the name brands (Daiwa, Shimano, Abu, Pflueger, etc....) in the 2500 size. Spool it with 20lb braid, and grab a 6'6" or 7"  Medium Berkley Lightning Rod Shock. That combo won't break the bank, fish all the things you listed, and give you trouble free use.

I think this is some good advice. Although I'm a fan of lesser-poundage braid on spinning gear, you'll do fine with 20 lb for just about anything you'll encounter.

I used 10# mono for many years until I switched over to 15# braid. Rods of 6-1/2' in M power and Fast action have served me very well as all-purpose rods and I've used them for just about all techniques. I use Daiwa reels in the 2500 size.

FWIW, I've been a Pflueger President owner and they are obviously great reels.

 

Still, I bought a Trion for a setup for my son.  I have to tell you, that Trion is a very nice little reel as well.  If you're really trying to keep your budget small, I think you would be able to save $10-15 by buying a Trion and be pretty happy.

Pick up a pflueger president for $59.99 and grab a decent rod. Cabelas had some really nice combos. I'm looking at one for my self. Pflueger president / cabelas tourney trail combo.theres a few different sizes and action for any purpose you need. 6'6 medium or medium/light. All purpose. $89.99. Then you have some cash for line ,bait, etc..
