First Baitcaster Suggestions

Featured Replies

All of my fishing whether it be fresh or saltwater has been with spinning tackle... I want to try a baitcasting setup, I already purchased a rod and don't know what reel I should get.

Any suggestions...

Lots of my fishing is topwater or weightless soft plastic fishing ( sometimes a bullet weight) If that helps?

The rod I have is a 7' medium Abu Garcia Vengeance... Does the type of fishing I posted above match that of the rod I have? Should this setup be used for a different tper of fishing?

What is your budget?

Id want to stay under $200 but would go to $250...

I think the rod is fine for those presentations.  I'd get a reel with a metal frame, not graphite which is used in many of the lowest priced reels from various manufacturers.  A metal frame flexes less and provides better alignment of parts, helping casting, retrieving, and longevity.  I use mostly Shimanos, a few Abus but any of the major reel companies produce good reels.  A Shimano Citica or Abu Revo S will get the job done nicely.

Bass pro shops Pro Qualifier is $99 (unless the sale is still going). I just bought my first BC and that is what I ended up buying. Quite happy with it. They have left and right hand retrieve in all the ratios. I picked up the 6.4:1 sine I wanted an all around BC. Probably don't want to spend too much more than that in case you end up hating the BC, doubt you will hate it though.

That rod is fine for that type of fishing. If it was my first baitcaster and I did not know if I was going to like it, I'd stay around $100 for a reel. The Revo S, Citica, and BPS Pro Qualifier are all reels in that range that have metal frames and good resale.

If you are new to casting a baitcaster I would spool it with some 12# mono to start and become proficient with it. If you backlash with a superline or braid in the beginning it tends to be a doosy, much worse than mono.

Good Luck

That kind of money can buy you a very nice reel.  Especially if you don't mind used.  Lews Tournament Pro, Daiwa Zillion, Pflueger Patriarch, Shimano Chronarch, Okuma Komodo or Helios are a few.  I think the Zillion is the only one on that list that would have to be bought used to stay withing your budget although it might be possible to find one on flea-bay.

Daiwa Sol and Fuego are very nice as well as are some of the older Daiwas such as the TD-Z, TD-X and TD-S.  The new Daiwa Lexa has been getting very good reviews.  Abu Premier Gen 2 would make an excellent choice as would an STX Gen 2.  For $200-$250 you would have to work pretty hard to find a bad reel.

Lews tournement pro with a 7:1 gear ratio for what you want to do. You can shop around and get them for around $160.

I don't own one, but a Daiwa Lexa has gotten great reviewsbon here. I heard it's great for lighter lures such as weightless soft plastic.

Shimano Chronarch 50e

I would get a Revo S. I just got one a few weeks ago and have been pretty dang happy with it. Like Crappiebasser said, you could get another rod and reel with the extra few bucks too
