Boat Batteries/charging System Questions

Featured Replies

I just purchased a new to me boat, and went to plug my battery charger in and noticed some stuff not connected. The seller put 2 new batteries in for the trolling motor I(24v), wired in series, but not connected to anything else.  My primary battery has 800 wires on it. It has a minn kota mk 2 dc charger connected to the battery, and charger leads were just laying there. I take it this works off the alt/stator of the engine while running as a charger, and I connect to my trolling  batteries? Also there is a minn kota mk 210 charger not hooked up to anything. Im assuming this is my 120v charger because of the cord, and I also has 2 sets battery leads which I guess go to the trolling batteries. Do all these wires go together (both chargers) to the trolling batteries and charge from either or all connected the same time?

Also the trolling motor is wired to the single battery. Shouldn't this be on the end of series of the 2 trolling batteries, or are they already linked together? Id guess to the 2 batteries for 24v. the troller is a minn 65# 24v. It worked, but didn't seem to work correctly when I used it, and that may explain it.

there is supposed to be a purple wire off the mk 2 to my charging system, how to I verify it is connected to the right one? I don't know anything about boat motors lol

And last question, the 2 pairs of leads on each charger,... with the batteries in series, the leads just go to each battery anyways as if they weren't connected? or just use one set from each charger?

I think I have it right, but want to verify with someone who knows better. I found a manual for the mk-2-dc, but it doesn't correspond with the 120v.

Thanks in advance!

You should have 2 leads from the charger to each of the trolling motor batteries, the batteries wired in series and 2 leads from the TM to the batteries with a fuse or circuit breaker on the + lead at or near the battery. Everything else goes to the starting battery which includes the finders, livewells, bilge, radio, etc. The MK2 is a 2 bank charger and should be hooked up to the TM batteries only. The starting battery is charged off the alternator on the big motor. Your TM is not up to par because it's running off 12v. Sounds like the guy was in a hurry to get rid of the boat.

Edit. Looks like the MK2 is charging the TM batteries off the alternator. I'm not sure how those leads connect to the big motor.

If it was me, I'd get rid of the clutter. Buy one 3 bank plug in charger and be done with it. Plug it in after each use and freshen it up the night before you go out. I've been on the TM the better part 12 hours and have never run out of juice on a 24v system.

It has 2 chargers though. A mk-2dc and an mk210.  I think the engine charges a battery which when running, closes a switch to charge the trolling batteries also off that battery. So all 3 charge when running. When the engines off, I think it opens, then it doesn't charge the tm batteries anymore, then the other is 120v plug in.. set of leads to the tm batteries only. This is how I did it, I think this is right?

The TM batteries appear correct. Without the knowledge of how the MK2 gets the line power or the switching mechanism, that also looks correct. Another question for you. Most modern chargers are now equipped with inline fuses on at least one of the "load" leads for each battery if not both. You did not include them in your diagram. If they are not equipped, may I recommend installing them. I had a charger with a bad bank, which did not have fused leads, take out a relatively new battery.

cool thanks. yea they all have inline fuse holders and fuses, and the trolling motor has a resetting breaker type protection. Imma change a few terminals tomorrow then plug her in!
