Kayak And Float Tube, Anybody Like Them?

Featured Replies

Hey all,

Ive upgraded from shore fishing!

I'm 18 so I can't have a bass boat, therefore my dad got me a kayak and float tube to fish big ponds and small lakes

I'm excited to give them a try.

I was just wondering if anybody has one of these and likes them. Any tips or advice for fishing in them would be great!

Big time kayak fisherman here! Never done the float tube.

Make sure you think through how you want your gear to be set in the yak. If it is a tippy yak, you might want to secure your rod(s) and gear bags.

A net is helpful to have.

Extremely important, assuming you're set here, a PFD in case you capsize and can't swim, or are unconscious, etc... critical.

You'll love getting into tight places, finding new spots to fish. Enjoy these days!

What kind of kayak did you get, btw?

Awesome!

It was a kayak my dad used to use so Im not sure of name brand or anything but its in good shape!

Its a 22 pound Kevlar kayak, Im excited to use it.

Im also interested to see how it feels to fish in. Being in that position (sitting in a kayak) will be a different feel.

Any other tips for fishing in it would be great

Curious to know the brand. Being a kevlar yak, it would probably have been pricey. Is it a Sit on Top, or a Sit Inside style? Or is it a canoe-style (aka hybrid) yak?

Sit on Top and Hybrids would, IMO, be the easiest to fish from. But plenty of people fish from sit insides. And being Kevlar, you may be limited in outfitting it unless it already is outfitted for fishing. But that certainly is not a show stopper, you've got options.

And there are thousands of articles on the web for yak fishing from all types of kayaks.

Getting off the bank, and out of the back of others' boats really opened a new world of bass fishing for me.  Anything that gets you off the bank will help you improve.

I love fishing from my kayaks and you will too. Catching a big fish and going on your first sleigh ride will give you a smile for a few weeks :)

I use a float tube for trout fishing on small lakes. Like flyfisher said, its a lot of fun when you hook a big one and let them pull you around. I have an Outcast Super Fat Cat. I really love this tube, very comfortable and keeps you up out of the water and it has a v-shaped nose that help you get around a little easier. Fighting the wind is a little tough though.
