Alright so go with the Berkeley Lightning ML 7"....I noticed there is a "Shock" version too...what is the deal with that.

 

Just want to make sure I am not wasting money on something that is going to be "ehh" for dropshoting

 

The Shock is meant for superlines like braid. The guides are build for it and the blanks is suppose to be more forgiving on hooksets like a 'moderate fast' action. You can still use regular line on it though

If you are going to step up to the Shock price point @50 bucks, take a look at the BPS Tourney Specials. They are pretty good sticks and better than the lightning rods (IMO) when you get up in that area. There are other options as well.

Well...I think I may wait until I can get one of the BPS Extreme Rods...I have tons of other rigs to try and learn anyways since I am new to bass fishing. When I get more serious I will look into a drop shot rod. I think that is best at this point

That sounds like a sensible approach. I find that I never know what type of gear I need for a certain presentation until I learn it. If I'm missing fish then I'll try to adjust my gear accordingly. My first worm rod was a ML

What you have will work just fine. A lot of the drop shorting depends on what your fishing in. Most people think it is a light tackle thing but I fish it in the summer on 61/2 ft ugly stick with a bait casting reel and 10 or 12 lb test line. I can also cast it out over ledges and draw it back like Carolina rig. I feel the advantage of that is you can keep it in one spot and dance it around a bit. I use a o/4 worm hook on mine in the summer with a 3/8 oz or larger bell sinker on the end. It was my 2nd most effective bait last summer using one of those super sized trick worms on it.

As far as Ugly sticks go. well they are cheap,very tuff. I bought my first one the first year they were made (about 30 yrs ago)and I still have it and it along with about 8-9 others.

I think you will be pleased with the Extreme ML.   I have the 6'6" model and am always surprised at how great a rod it is.

 

Have it paired with an old Stradic 1000FE.  The rod is about 10 years old and still going strong.  In fact, I also have 2 Extremes for baitcasting that are great sticks!  At $79 they are definiteyl a best buy!

Alright guys I got a BPS Extreme ML 6'8" and some cheap 8lb mono backing and 8lb Seguar Invizx (that line wasn't cheap lol). Sound good???

Somebody was saying he was a college student and did not have a lot of money. Well your education is more important than some high ( overpriced and overrated ) rod so buy a cheaper rod and reel. The rod is only part of the feel anyway. How you hold it, where ,the rods action, line test and weight on the end all go into it. Feel is a developed skill. Only thing that really hinders feel to me are sponge grips. I do not worry that much about feel anyway.as long as I can feel the hit that is really all that is important.

You will be very happy with the rod you chose!! When you upgrade later a year two whatever it will still be worthy of a better reel and maybe think about 6 lbs test if the cover your fishing in will allow it, just my preference with the ML rods, I am sure you have a seriously affective rig, great line and rod!

I am always buying more stuff...I feel like I will never get around to using it all! haha I don't want to overwhelm myself though...i got jigs, worms, lizards, crankbaits, spinnerbaits, swimbaits, shads, drop shot stuff, split shot stuff, texas rig stuff....I don't even know what to begin to use when I go fishing!!

You'll like that rod. I have the same one. I've got a couple of my buddies convinced they need one as well just because of how much I like it.

Awesome guys can't wait to catch something on it! My palomar knot is a little sloppy and trying to get the hook to stick out is a bit tough, but I am getting better
