Punching Grass

Featured Replies

I just got a punch of 3/4oz and 1 oz punching jigs and 3/0 punching hooks with tungesten 1oz punching weights. I was wonderign what plastics you like to the T-rig and for the jigs. Also, do you look for certain areas when punching grass like holes in the grass or near the weed edge or just into the thickest stuff possible? Haven't really done much of it before.

I've found that beaver type baits are popular. I have tested the fall rate of the BPS brand beaver type baits, and it is very quick compared to a stick bait, lizard or worm. Creature biats would also work pretty well, but the ones I tested had a slower ROF than the Beavers. Also, some beavers have a streamlined body, making it less likely to get hung up on the way down.

for punching grass, I have found that using baits with a compact profile are the best. I don't like using baits with lots of appendages because I feel they catch on the grass on the way down. I like using 4" Berkley Chigger Craws as well as beaver baits.

Most Tx lakes, you don't have to punch grass until later in  the summer.

Why?  During the spring, we get alot of rain and the lakes fillup, at the same time, grass is growing again and fast.

Once the big cities takes a good drink from the lake in the summer due to people filling pools, gardens watering grass, washing cars, the levels drop and this mats the grass thicker on top as lake levels drop.

Normally, I can get away with lighter weights at first, also, there are alot more holes to pitch to in early spring as opposed to when they get matted shut.

The first technique I ever learned was tossing a one ounce pegged 10 inch power worm up in the air  straight up and away from the boat, did I stress away from the boat, gravity  will punch that mat for ya.

I learned from that to get bigger weights too.
