Trap setups

Featured Replies

what are you guys using to fish lipless cranks? I'm interested to know if you are using crankbait setups, or regular fast action casting rods and high speed reels. I lost alot of fish last year using an MBR782, but I'm not sure that wasn't from using the standard dull hooks, or the rod was the reason. I'd rather use the fast action rod than take along a crankbait rod only for lipless cranks. So, what do you use for Rod, Line, Reel?  thanks in advance

depends on the size of the bait, but anywhere from 6'6" mmf to an 8' mhmf for the rods, reels are 6.3 to 1 and line varies from 12-20 lb flouro

All Star Pro Series PR 826C 6'10" Medium Heavy Fast (the handle is long enough for 2 handed casts into the wind)

I throw most of my rattle baits on a Bud Erhardt composite cranking rod (7').  I generally throw a 1/2 oz rattle bait.   Over the years, I've tried several different reels for this duty, currently I'm using a well broken in Calcutta 250 and 20 lb Berkley Iron Silk.  You have to go easy the first few casts while you're getting the Iron Silk wet and stretched for the day, but after that you can cast a long ways and the abrasion resistance of that line is incredible.

I usually only throw 3/8 - 5/8 oz lipless cranks

I use a Powell Spook and Trap rod.  The action on this rod is perfect for throwing rattlebaits.

My reel is a Quantum (not sure of the exact name of it, but it is one of the PT versions) in 7.1:1 gear ratio.

For line I use Berkley Trilene Flourocarbon in 15 or 17 lb. test.

You can use a fast action rod for cranks.  Just have to be slower/easier on the hook set, and, careful during the fight - that's where you get the benefit of the soft action.

If you are missing a lot of fish, really sounds like you need a softer rod, though.

For lipless cranks I prefer a graphite rod (Lamiglas custom CCB 854 MF) with a mod-fast action.  Graphite for lighter and sensitive and mod-fast for softer action but a little stiff to fling that lure to the horizon and a solid backbone for control.  This rod can also double as a good top-water tight line presentations (props, sticks, poppers, chuggers, etc.).

Use Quantum PT 7:1 with 15lb fluoro.
