Trouble With My Trolling Motor

Featured Replies

Last season I purchased a MinnKota PowerDrive 55lb. It was a Craigslist purchase, but it was basically new, not a scratch or mark on it. The end of the season, it got stuck on full speed. Everything else worked, but it wouldn't slow down. I called MK today & explained the situation. I also included the fact that I'm a hardcore advocate and loyal customer. So they took 25% off the circuit board and & covered the express shipping. I ended up paying $67 but I also wasted $70 on a pedal thinking that was the issue. I'm gonna fix the motor, but I'm really uncomfortable keeping it. I want to go back to cable steering. My local Wal-Mart has the 50lb edge for $450. I would love to buy a more powerful 24V motor but my boat doesn't have any more room for batteries. Any ideas gentlemen??

Not a fan of the Powerdrive foot pedal. Maybe you can at least get your money back selling it to the next guy. As far as not having room for another battery, you can either make room or deal with a 12v motor. I don't think you have any other option.

Sell the extra pedal on ebay or craigslist to recoup some of your money.  If you fish a lot of electric only lakes and like to spend long days on the water I would stay away from the Edge.  You want a variable speed motor such as the Maxxum.  If you absolutely can't make room for another battery I would get a 55lb Maxxum or if you can find a way to squeeze another battery go for the 70lb or 80lb version.

I upgraded to a 70lb variable speed Maxxum from an old MG speed control motor and it absolutely blows it away with battery life.  I also used to run a 42lb MK speed control and it's a huge difference in batt life in comparison as well.  I've spent several 5-10 hours days on the water without any worry of battery life.  I typically run it at 50-75% when traveling a distance to a new spot and down at 20-35% when fishing and repositioning the boat.

I have one of the v2 power drive MinnKota 70 lb thrust motors, and after 20 years of the normal foot pedal, it has

taken me 3 years to accept the new pedal.  I am used to it now so plan to stick it out.  After you get your ckt board

in the 55lb, I would keep it.  More than likely it is a far better motor.  Everything breaks down sooner or later, and

your motor should be good for many years, and no money out for a long time.
