Diy Kayak Trailers

Featured Replies

Has anyone built/modified a trailer for hauling your kayaks? I'm looking into doing this with the 4' trailer from Harbor Freight. Any pics and advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks Goose52, nice job. That's the same trailer I'm thinking of buying. Have you been happy with the trailer? Any negatives?

Jim - that wasn't my build, I just remembered the thread. I car-top my canoe....however, if I ever trailer, I will also start with that Harbor Freight kit.  I fish 11 lakes, the farthest only 6 miles from my house, with a 30 mph speed limit, so I don't need much in the way of a trailer. If I was going to trailer a long way, I might be concerned about those little 10" wheels in the Harbor Freight kit and might be thinking of upgrading those...

Is there anything about the trailer you DON'T like?

How did you secure the plywood to the frame?

How did you secure the sides to the plywood/frame?

Is it difficult removing the spring?

Thanks.

Well as far as the trailer for me its the perfect size. i own a mazda3 so anything bigger would be to much for the car.

I made the box part first, its fit to just be inside the frame so i wouldnt hit any bolts that hold the trailer and if i really wanted could add some stakes to slide into the trailer. The box itself is attached underneath with some bolts and big fender washers. that thing isnt going anywhere, but at the same time if i wanted i could unbolt it and put a different body on the frame for home depot runs ect.

Im not really sure i under stand the spring question. i havent removed any yet. waiting on a test run to see if its too bouncy or not.

If you need pics or anything ill be glad to help out.i got most of my ideas through the texaskayakfishing site.Just customize to your own likes.i do wish i made it a tad bigger to fit my paddles and or rods. lol

Thanks. I was thinking of another thread where the people were saying the ride is too bouncy with both springs on, so they removed 1 of them.

ive heard the same thing. Im going to test it out like this first and see where i am before modding the suspension.its a matter of finding time and money to get the tongue piece to complete this thing..lol its killing me using it for storage in my garage.
