Live Waterdogs

Featured Replies

I stopped by the boat dealership this afternoon to pick up some Optimax oil, and they were selling waterdogs. Those things are huge! I was in a hurry, so I didn't pay much attention to them, but now I'm curious. Has anyone ever used them? If so, did you have any luck? What kind of tackle did you use and how did you rig them?

Oh god, I wish I could fish live waterdogs here. They are killers. I have used them for bass and pike in Colorado when I was a kid.

I fished with them once when a supplier of ours invited me on a guided trip.Little did I know we were going to be using waterdogs for the day. We hooked them through the lips with a 3/0 worm hook and no weight,15# mono and a 7' MHF rod and just tossed em out there in 6'-12' of water. The fish would absolutely annihilate these things . I actually caught a fish that jumped out of the water and drug on top to the boat that wasn't even hooked ..just had a deathgrip on the thing. Depending on the ferocity of the hit you will be lucky to get 3 fish off of 1 waterdog, kinda pricey when you consider back then they were $1 each. I have not fished with them since.

I use them with some regularity, primarily for flathead cats. Hook them through the foreward part of the mouth. I go through both jaws, then add a keeper to prevent the hook from enlarging the hole enough for the waterdog to slip off the hook. I make my keepers by punching out pieces of a plastic coffee can lid with a paper punch, then drill a tiny hole in the punchout.

That's awesome! I may have to break down and buy some.
