Whats Your Best Tactic When Fish Are On Beds??

Featured Replies

The fish have finally moved up to the shallow coves and are beginning to bed on my home lake. I went last weekend and caught one 3 lber that had her fin sticking out of the water. Threw at 3 or 4 other similar sized fish multiple times, but they wouldnt take anything i tried. I tried flukes, beavers, jigs, spinnerbaits, senkos and even topwater frogs, but just couldnt get some of them to hit it. I know not all fish will take a lure presented at it when on bed, but i was wondering what you guys throw at fish on beds?? I know stealth is important to! Gotta love bed fishing!

Wow thanks J! A dropshot, or i guess almost a bubba shot with a longer leader, never crossed my mind as a technique for bed fishing. Gonna have to give it a try!

My best option is to fish elsewhere. Pull out to the first drop, and fish there for pre and post spawn fish. Both are much easier to catch than bed fish.

Rage craw on a shakey head. Only lure I've caught bedding fish on. Then again, I don't bed fish often and that worked great at the time.

Swimbait. Sometimes it takes up to half an hour on one fish, sometimes the first cast. But keep swimming it around over the bed, on the bed, in the bed. Kill it, jump it, hit the fish. Tick the thing off. Today I had a 6 lber on a bed, fished it for 20 minutes and it wouldnt budge, then all the sudden 4 casts in a row it swiped at my bait, the last time I killed it and she inhaled it. It pays off sometimes.
