Ri Boat Registration Question

Featured Replies

I just bought a 14 ft plastic fishing boat off craigslist. I was wondering if I need to register it. Also going to throw a trolling motor on it. I have no paperwork. The wording on the dem website is confusing. Hope I didn't buy something I can't use.

Thanks in advance for your help.

depends on what state u are in.  call ur fish and game...and probably file paper work at county courthouse.  it gets pretty confusing in PA but I'll give you few tips from here to help zero in what questions to ask.

if i have a canoe/kayak/boat with PADDLES only:

i don't need to register it with the state.

i DO need a canoe/boat LAUNCH permit if on specific lakes (mostly state owned).

"launch lake's" each require their OWN permit (usually only $5).

if i have any motor attached (electric or gas):

i need to register it (i think $35 for 2yrs. $25 there after).

i still need to buy a LAUNCH permit for each specific lake.

I didn't have a sales receipt from the original owner (purchased canoe off craigslist years ago).

the same lady at boat registration office (in county court house) had me fill out an affidavit form.  i basically had to promise the boat isn't stolen and pay sales tax on it.

if everything checks out ok, they will mail a permanent registration to me in 5 weeks.

fill out ur profile info and you get get alot more help to ur questions

Yes, you do need to register your boat and motor. I have a similar boat with a trolling motor, and I needed to register both.

In MA, I only needed to register the canoe.  They weren't interested in the trolling motor, or its model and serial number.
