What depths are you getting with on these? Line diameter?  I want a batch of cranks to run 6-10 inches below surface.   Manns 1-  like stated was going to be my next attempt.  For straight up squarebills I like the KVD 1.5 or 2.5.

With the egg I usually get anywhere from a surface wake to 3" depth regardless of line or cadence. I usually fish either 30lb. braid w/15lb. fluoro leader, or straight 8 lb. fluoro. The Mann's 1 Minus will be closer to your goal of 6" but fall short of 10".

Speed Traps, a very under rated bait.

Bomber Square-A is one of my favorite baits of all time.  Wake baits, I have a few of the H2O wakes and they are great.  Also the Bomber shallow-A

I agree with the Manns 1- (Baby and regular Manns 1-). The Egg is probably my second favorite. (The ones I modify to run deeper than 6" are amazing!)

 

And you can't beat 1.5's and 2.5's Lucky Craft KO's. (I've painted quit a few of these- they work extremely well (for a plastic Crank).

 

Old school lure that kicks amazing arse? Rapala (wood) Shallow Fat Rap SFR-7  1/2 OZ- They are discontinued and extremely expensive now-a-days. As these discontinued lures become harder to get and MUCH, MUCH, harder to manufacter, the guys that held on to those old Bagley's, Luh Jensen, and (ugh) "other ones" are gonna have some really nice baits that this new generation of 4-5 LBers have never "felt" or seen. 

 

With a bit of modification the River 2 Sea Cha Cha is another "sleeper" shallow Crank most fish have never seen/felt. (I paint mine in Frog colors and tweak it- works WELL!) 

 

Ironic that nobody on this forum has mentioned Rapala.......is it me or has Rapala made one too many "duds" here in the last 10 years??? Compared to a company like Manns (which typically has solid, well-designed, lures) Rapala is batting (like) 250 lately. (lol)

 

The Rapala Scatter Shad is new technology???? Really?? Anybody tried the Molix Vario (back in 2011)? (LOL)

When I see shallow I think 1ft or less. BPS Egg reeled in fast and Bomber Shallow A are my two favorite.

I hadn't mentioned Floating Rapala's ONLY because I don't view them as shallow diving crankbaits.  But "shallow" is relative I suppose.  I LOVE Floating Rapala's.  If there is a crankbait that can produce a fish when none others will, it's the floating Rapala.

I agree! One of the best techniques of all time for Spooky clear water fish is a Floating Rap. BUT, Rapala designed that quite a while back. In my honest opinion, the 2 best things Rapala has come out with latlety (for Bass) is the Husky Jerk and the Skitter Pop.

 

Why??? Why would I diss Rapala??? I'm not. I have and use (choice modified) Rapala's. But, to be honest, I rarely use a Rapala lure on tourney day. Why?

 

#1 Because every single person (whether they be a sponsored Torunament fisherman to an 8 yr old bank fishing) uses a Rapala. Even people who don't fish know Rapala. Needless to say, the (older/larger) Bass have ugh seen a Rapala a couple times....up close....(wink).

 

#2. There are many more options than a Rapala now-a-days. Twenty-five years ago Rapala was (really) the only game in town.....and of course, there are ways to modify lures to make them unusual enough to make them less "ordinary"...

 

ALL those Pros we watch on TV- they are using modified lures- plain and simple.

For the method you mentioned specifically, I can think of no better bait than the Lucky Craft LC Wake Action crank. I personally prefer the 3.5WK model.

Bomber Square A here. Caught a lot of quality fish on them.

BPS The Egg caught this nice bass. I like that I can cast this lure far, has very good action. It does come with crappy treble hooks so I changed out to VMC short shank size 4 trebles. Since this lure is short in length, the hooks get caught in each other.

Also The Egg is a tough lure, it's been banged on rocks and other debris and have not lost the bill and still runs true.

Have alot of confidence in this lure, also does a great job as a v wake lure.

WDE, everyone has their favorites. Mann's are excellent.

 

Your goal is to choose ones based on your fishing and HOW MANY ARE YOU GOING TO LOSE IN THE GRASS AND WOOD?

 

If you lose one or two you need to consider the less expensive models.

 

If you do not lose any you can go with the higher priced brands.

 

The funny thing is that the normal bass don't know the difference between a low and high priced crankbait. Of course, there are a number of the big bass that read this Forum and will only hit those cranks priced at over $10. Otherwise, the crank of your choice will do the trick.

 

Another factor is the time of year. A think body crank for cold water and a fat one for a big wobble in warm water is what you need. I have my favorite brand and colors. You have to experiment and do the same.

 

Now go out and experiment with Bandits, Megabass and Strike Kings and let us know which ones produce the best fish.
