It's more about stealth in lower water in my mind.  The bait doesn't seem to matter to much as most smaller creeks/rivers don't have the same forage base as larger bodies of water so the bass are much more opportunistic feeders.  I used to fish a small creek in college that there was one rock where i could catch the same fish every single time out.  Coolest thing was over the years i was there i saw the fish grow and the last time i caught it she measured at 19.5" and the creek is no more than 25 feet wide at the most.

This...Sneak up and make your first cast count.

I kill em on topwater late summer, I have a smallmouth stream in my back yard. Pop R, Jitterbug, Rapala J-7

I wade a creek in my area thats full of smallies, I have caught them on a variety of baits, twisters, mepps spinners, mimic minnows, crankbaits, senkos and tubes. The water is fairly clear so slow and stealthy is the key.  The best part is I catch the occasional pike or walleye too.

White spinnerbaits and pop rs.

Mini king spinnerbaits, grubs, Rapala cranks, panther martins

I've had alot of luck with the mini fluke, tubes, beetle spins, and 3-4 inch senkos.

In my opinion, it doesn't get any better than chasing smallmouth in a creek. As mentioned above, it seems to be more about location and stealth than the lure choice.

My favorite creek lures

Zoom 4" Lizard

Smaller (4"?) Senko

Booyah Pond Magic Spinnerbaits

Rooster Tails

Mini Rat-L-Traps
