Max Drag For Flippin/pitchin Reel

Featured Replies

When looking for a reel for flippin/pitchin, what would be a minimum allowable max drag to look for? I know a high gear ration is optimal, but I'm not sure about the minimum amount of drag a reel should have for this technique. Thanks for any help.

I guess that depends on what brand of reel you are looking at. Shimano's run 10-15lbs max depending on the model and ABU's are 20-22lbs max depending on model. Ardent flipnpitch reels are set at 22lbs with no adjustment. Lews are on the low end similar to Shimano. Personally, I use Ardent F500's for jigs and punch rigs and heavier cover. I use Revo STX's for soft plastics and light to no cover applications. I have the thought process "I'd rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it"

Edit: The rod is more important than the reel for this technique

I use a Citica E which maxed out makes 11 pounds of drag. I lock it down and with 65# braid I've never had it slip. I'm using a Powell Max 7105 flip/punch rod and pulling really hard on these fish to get them out of the grass and I never have a problem. So this is just my findings but I'd say your good to go with most quality baitcasters.

Personally, I'd pick up a Revo with a decent IPT and crank it down. You'll break the line, hook, and rod before that will slip ;)
