Pretty much for free via a return and Cabelas points I grabbed a reel. Checked out a revo, quantum and helios(which is awesome). Ended up grabbing the daiwa aird. Fell in love with the reel after 30 seconds playing with it. Actually I live it so much I grabbed the matching aird rod 6'6 m/f. Don't tell my wife. Lol lol lol

Btw didn't end up getting anything on sale technically but only thing I ended up paying for was $47 towards the rod and a pack of keiteks

I only use quantum. best fishing gear.

Never used them, but that EXO looks sweet.

I have the quantum accurist spinning combo. Great set up.

Out of every brand of rods and reels I own, I only own two from the same company (a St Croix Mojo, and LTB). I actually almost make a point not to get the same brand, because I like to try everything out. An Abu Revo is next on my list, or a Quantum Smoke (even though I already own a Quantum). 

 

Edit: That's not entirely true. I have pretty much settled with Pflueger spinning reels, although I'm always open to trying something else out.

haha. One reason I am a Revo man is because its nice to my wallet.  If I could affor a Chronarch, I would probably go for it.

Even though I had issues with the S, it was an awesome little reel. The STX is neck and neck with the Chronarch IMO.

I almost went with the Gen 2 Revo STX last spring and then tried the Lew's TSS and thought I had found my reel for the future, but I like the collecting part of the equipment almost as much as fishing it. Almost. 

Update* 300 casts or so in and it's getting noisy and a tad rough. Also not a fan of the break control on the outside of the reel. My index finger is moving it during casting so I have to re adjust every 15 casts or so. I'm a right but use left hand reels.

So it sounds like you had the ol goggles on, cheated on your old lady ended up with the clap....well at least you didn't knock up the new girl and get more than one of the "other brand" LOL

Hahaha haha that was a funny post. Yea. I also ordered a quantum baitcast reel for real cheap hope it's not the same scenario. I'm gonna strip down the Daiwa and do a moderate clean and lube. Hopefully that helps.

No experience with the Aird, but I do have at least 14 Daiwa b/c reels of various models.  Never had a problem with the outside brake adjustment moving yet.  I normally cast right hand  The reels are probably about half right, half left hand.  I do cast left hand when right hand would be too awkward.

 

As far as Abus are concerned, I was using my Gen 1 STX-L with 40# Sufix Performance a lot the last 2 weeks.  It is the magnetic brake only model.  Threw with, across and into the wind with only an occasional small overrun....no backlashes.  Was letting it rip most times...even when throwing directly into the wind, and it was windy quite a few days.

 

Check how you are holding the reel.  Maybe you can make a slight adjustment to avoid moving the brake setting.  Don't know about the noise

Was on the water all day for practice. I usually hold it right hand and cast right only retrieve left. I typically hold the reel with index up near the guide so the line runs over my index and middle and ring behind reel leaving only my pinky south of trigger. I tried casting today with index and middle behind on the blank and ring, pinky south of the trigger. No probs at all. Just the way I was holding it. Still doesn't count for the noise. And the rubbing feeling is only occurring 1/3rd of 1 revolution of the handle. Maybe a slight misalignment in the gearing.

Stopped by local pond tonight to make a few casts. I had re oiled the reel, just a tint bit on the gears. Grinding is so dam annoying. I also Google the issue and see others on other forums experience the same thing. Is it time to return it or do any of you think it will eventually break in and smooth out?

IMO, I'd return it. The wife's $69 Daiwa TSH Pro she got at the Spring Classic sale is smooth as can be. 

Swapped it out for same one. Buddy at Cabelas thinks the roller bearing failed. I think it's a gear issue. Oh well new one is smooth and if this is shot after 100 casts this one is going back too.

If you oiled the gears, that partially explains the grinding.  Gears should always be greased, never oiled.  You should also clean off the old lube before adding new.

It was grinding out the box before I put anything on it. Wanted to see if oil would help. I dropped oil on the gear that makes the guide go back and forth and inside the where the spool sits. It didn't help didn't make it worse either.
