Rage Toad Problems

Featured Replies

Was fishin Lake Shelbyville, IL and killin'm w shallow diving crankbaits at the weed edges and a rage toad at every laydown/change in contour.

Only problem was that the Rage Toad wasn't running right side up all the time.  On the start of the return it would run fine for 5-10 foot then roll over and run upside down all the way back to the boat.  I tried a smaller hook(4/0 to 2/0) to decrease water drag and went to a superline hook(2/0 and 4/0) hopin a lil extra weight would help but neither did.

Wat should i do to keep this frog runnin true?

Or am i just an idiot?

make sure it's hooked properly, dead center.  I always use them with an 1/8 oz keel weighted hook.  The 1/8 weight improves casting distance, makes it run right side up, and is not heavy enough to make it sink too much.

Use a 5/0 EWG Superline hook as shown on the illustration in the above post and be sure to hook it correctly, not bowing the back upward when skin hooking

If you prefer a 5/0 - 1/8 oz weighted hook, it adds a little distance to your cast but you need to keep your rod tip a little higher during retrieve to run it slow on top  :)

5/0 Superline hook should help a lot but sometimes it's not enough and you might have to use a keel weighted hook. If that is the case, I usually use the lightest keel weighted hook I can find.

i was having the same problem with them when i first tried them. what i found works best ,for me atleast , is to put a slight bend downward in the belly. a slight U shape. keep foolin around with it and youll get the hang of it. they are fantastic baits.

Definitely try rigging it on a heavy 5/0 hook, preferably a screw-lock type. Then I do exactly as squertz described, and insert the hook just a hair further back to give it a touch more keel to the shape. Should get you fixed right up.

Fella's i appreciate it, thanks It is soooo annoying to run it over a laydown and hook a tree because it wouldn't run right side up.
